How can we dramatically reduce cancer deaths by 2035?

That urgent question brought together national leaders in Washington, D.C., at the Cancer 2035: A Roadmap for the Future, co-hosted by the Milken Institute and the Richard Nixon Foundation.  Dr. William Li, founder and president of the Angiogenesis Foundation, was invited to join leading oncologists, researchers, policymakers, and industry experts to help shape the future of cancer prevention in our country.

One message was clear: We already have powerful tools to reduce the cancer burden - but we must use them earlier and more effectively.

On a panel focused on prevention, early detection, and interception, Dr. William Li, Charles Balch (President, International Society of Oncology Prevention and Treatment), and William Nelson (Director, Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center) stressed that the science to cure many cancers already exists. They emphasized that up to 50% of cancers could be more successfully treated if detected early. But early detection is only part of the solution.

Dr. Li highlighted the Angiogenesis Foundation’s pioneering work applying the same rigorous scientific standards used in drug development to everyday foods. Rather than offering one-size-fits-all advice, our research identifies which foods, preparation methods, and varieties deliver the most potent bioactive compounds that support healthy angiogenesis and the body’s defense systems.

The panel underscored that meaningful progress by 2035 will require integrating Food as Medicine with advanced therapies — combining prevention, early detection, nutrition, and clinical care to achieve the greatest impact.
